I always encourage people to take the time and energy to make the inside and outside of their homes something that is enjoyable and relaxing for them to spend time in. One of the best ways that people can improve the look and feel of their outdoor space is to plant a flower garden. Planting a flower garden is wonderful because it gives people a way to enjoy time outside and to make their outdoor space more beautiful. Never planted a flower garden before? There are few things as relaxing and enjoyable as spending time in your flower garden, so make it your newest hobby and you will have your family calling you inside as the sun sets at the end of the day. First time buyers need support

: Changes in the threshold for stamp duty failed to stop the inroads made by the tax, a new study by a leading mortgage lender reveals. Portman Building Society shows that in the following months after the rise in the exemption threshold from April 2005, British homeowners paid almost Ј60 million more in stamp duty than in the same period before April. Portman Building Society also advises that even though the government raised the threshold to Ј120,000, the change made minimal impact at a time of rising house prices, considering that the average property stands close to Ј200,000 and the typical first-time buyer purchase amounts to Ј145,000. Matthew Wyles, group development director at Portman Building Society commented that "Stamp duty is no more than a form of advance capital gains tax - paid long before buyers have enjoyed any of the financial benefits achievable from home ownership". First-time buyers should be liberated from this unjust tax. Newcastle Building Society is hoping to help first-time buyers by launching new mortgage deals aimed specifically at graduates. Steve Urwin, the marketing manager from Newcastle Building Society advises they understand the issues first-time buyers face so they launched the 100 per cent mortgage and the guarantor mortgage at the society. Mr Urwin says that there are parents and grandparents who want to help their offspring become first-time buyers. This is made possible through sharing the initial cost of a mortgage, with the first-time buyers taking on increasing responsibility as they start getting paid more. The new first-time buyer mortgage offerings include a deal that offers 100 per cent loan-to-value on properties valued up to Ј200,000. If you have big credit card debt are you a complusive debtor

In recent years there has been a growing incidence of consumers carrying hight credit card debt. Many are finding this debt burden difficult to handle, but would rather not examine whether they may be compulsive when it comes to using credit cards. Denial can run deep. Those with heavy debt are reluctant to admit that they may be compulsive and out of control when it comes to managing their money. Facing it is simply too painful. Probably most people who are finding that substantial credit card debt is proving difficult to manage will not care to dig very deeply into this topic. Such is the nature of denial. We'd prefer simply to ignore any examination of signs that we may be compulsive and out of control around money. It's too painful to contemplate. Indeed, most who have dysfunctional and compulsive tendencies when it comes to money will not begin to look closely at their debting behavior until it reaches crisis proportions. Only then, as panic begins to take over, will a degree of willingness to examine one's relationship to money, personal finances and debt begin to creep in. Often, the first impulse when a personal financial crisis erupts is to blame others and assume the role of a victim. Obviously, this offers no solution, and probably will compound the dilemma. Next, some willingness to seek debt help may occur, and the debtor then looks at the possibilities of borrowing from family or friends, thus dragging others into the problem who don't deserve it. If that fails to work, alternatives such as debt consolidation, refinancing a mortgage and even bankruptcy are considered. These measures can reduce debt and provide some relief, but always fail to address an underlying problem of compulsive debting. If you find yourself in this situation, there are a number of clear signs that you may be a compulsive debtor. Here are a few questions you might ask yourself: 1. Is it difficult for you to pass up buying something on credit because it's a really good deal? 2. Does having the ability to whip out a credit card for purchases give you an ego boost, a feeling of being accepted, like being grown up or a member of a privileged club? 3. Are you using one credit card to pay off another? 4. Do you bounce checks from time to time? 5. Are you having problems meeting just ordinary personal expenses, and do you get a feeling of accomplishment when these obligations are satisfied? 6. Do you live in drama and chaos when it comes to money, continually having a crisis to deal with? 7. Are you vague about your personal finances, not being clear about how much you owe, your monthly expenses, interest rates and the like? There are a number of other indicators, but, if you answered several of these questions affirmatively, then you may be a compulsive debtor. Debt relief will evade you until you get a grip on the belief systems and behavior underlying your money problems. Credit counseling is probably in order, and you might benefit from a spiritual program such as Debtors Anonymous.

Gun cleaning 101

If the gun fails to fire in that situation, you probably won't live to regret it anyway. Neither will your family. (Of course, you can hide in your room and wait for your local overworked and understaffed police force to come to your rescue. But that's another subject.) Clean Your Gun! Cleaning Tips Use a bronze wire brush for normal bore cleaning. When removing copper, heavy lead fouling, or plastic shotgun wad fouling use a nylon brush with Shooters Choice or similar bore cleaner. (Shooters Choice is a powerful bore cleaner, will eat bronze brushes.) Run the bronze brush through the bore once for every round fired. (I prefer Hoppes #9 solvent for light cleaning.) If you are serious about the care of your gun invest in a coated steel or brass cleaning rod. Aluminum rods are soft. They collect grit and particles that can scratch the bore. Wipe the rod off after every pass through the bore. Use a brass jag to push patches through the bore. Dragging a dirty patch in a slotted tip back through the bore is not what I call cleaning. Use a bore guide or brass "bumper" to protect the chamber or muzzle crown from damage. Clean the action with a blast of pressurized solvent such as Gun Scrubber by Birchwood Casey. It cleans without leaving a residue. Oil Lightly! Oil attracts dirt! If you can see oil, you probably oiled too much! If you're concerned that you've oiled too much, try storing your gun with the barrel down. This will prevent oil or solvent from seeping into the wooden stock. Strip clean about every 800 rounds or so. If you don't know how and don't have an owners manual, take the gun to a Gunsmith. It doesn't cost that much. (It's cheaper than having him replace that spring that went flying into the recesses of your oh so clean garage or basement work room.) There's much more to gun care, but this info should put you ahead of the game. I have lived in New York City my entire life. I often feel privileged to be a part of the energy and magic of this Mecca of celebrity. Under the semi privileged dome of my existence, I encounter the rich and famous at every turn. When I was a teenager, I crossed paths with Jerry Lewis in Times Square and bumped elbows once with Marvin Gaye. As a passionate college student of Cinema Studies, I dined across the room from Woody Allen and stopped to compliment his latest film. At Cafй Des Artiste, a rather high end restaurant in Manhattan, I was celebrating my thirty-fourth birthday when lo and behold, charismatic Mayor Lindsey walked past my table. At a function at the World Trade Center many moons ago, I stood next to Barbara Walters and had a chat about something terribly mundane. I walked away feeling we were friends. I caught the eye of Andy Warhol window shopping on Madison Avenue, admired Faye Dunaway on Fifth and called after Joni Mitchell on the corner of Forty-Second and Third, just to say I was a fan. I could go on and on. Bill Clinton even used the bathroom in my building once. This is truth. I guess he couldn't hold it and his bodyguard entered our lobby to announce the dilemma. I believe my doorman has a photo of the cherished night. Not Bill on the john of course, just Bill and Pete, the doorman. So I didn't actually see Bill but my doorman did. I'm not bragging about any of this but I do live in New York. I've gone to charity dinners with actors, singers and statesmen. I've been lucky enough to spend my summers in East Hampton where celebrity is as common as sand and let's not forget, Bill Clinton used the bathroom in my apartment building. But here's the rub. In all my years living in this fair city I have never met a literary agent, or even seen one close up. Being a writer who's having a hard time getting published, this is a sad fact. They don’t seem to live anywhere near me. They're certainly never in my neighborhood and we have a lot of good restaurants on the upper west side. I can't help wondering where they do eat. They don't show up at the same parties across town and they don't even drink at the same bar. I never even sat next to one on an airplane. Where do you think they are? Hiding from me, perhaps? Do they see me coming, hungry for representation and run for the burbs? Do I give away my yearning for them in my expression, my need to be discovered, appreciated and signed on? Do I have to find a conference in which to pitch my precious novel? Why can't we have a friendly chat in the elevator? Why can't I find their missing pooch and emerge a hero, why aren't they related to my Aunt Em? Where the hell are these people? I would know one if I saw one, I'm quite sure. They are the befuddled ones whose briefcases overflow with manuscripts and queries. They wear formula friendly smiles and Next Bestseller buttons on their lapels. I think they only come out in the daytime because they have to go home and write rejection letters. This takes practically the whole night so most of them have circles under their eyes. I think they only speak to one another because they don't really know what makes the average reader tick; they think it's just about clothing the same characters in different color khakis. So maybe they're the zoned out sleepyheads on the subway listening to the same CD over and over again. You know who I'm talking about; they're the people asleep behind their sunglasses, lattes and ipods, exhausted by the latest seminar on What the Industry Wants. Maybe they're really jaded, so much so that the words in the books they read run into each other and one good novel is just like any other. They're probably not aware anymore that Tolstoy is not the Russian word for "hello" and Jane Eyre is not a brand name for refrigeration. This isn't because they're stupid, it's just that their minds are too full of the contemporary maze of repetition and when you put so much time in trying to find the next New York Times bestseller, you forget things. I keep looking for agents all over the place despite their shortcomings. After all, I'm a writer and my manuscripts need a mommy or daddy who will believe in them and sell my book's screen rights or get me a major publishing deal. I mean, after all, I'm told that's what they do for a living. Don't they need me as much as I need them? Well, I'll be patient. I guess they'll find me when the time is right. Once they devour me with promise, I will be theirs forever. I'll see them flying through the cavern of my dreams, their faces close, the contract of eternal representation in their hands. As these prolific little pundits move from shadow into form, their eyes burrowed in my manuscript, at last; their image, finally, clear as a dime store novel plot, I'll tip my writer's hat and welcome the occasion, as if the absence of these literary phantoms, was never felt.
